Dorothy Marie Evans Hess, born July 15, 1936, in Pocatello, Idaho, passed away peacefully at home on August 4, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones. She was 89 years old.
Dorothy was the daughter of Dorothy Marie and Darhl E. Evans. Throughout her life, she lived in several places, including Nyssa, Oregon; Tulelake, California; and Malad, Idaho. During elementary school, she fell ill and missed enough school that her mother held her back a grade. She ended up in the same grade as her younger brother Bob, and many people thought they were twins. She later graduated from Malad High School, where she served on the yearbook staff with Bob.
Dorothy married Verlin Boyer Hess on January 14, 1956, in Plymouth, Utah, in the family home. On April 23, 1993, they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Logan Utah Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Together, they raised a family and built a life centered on love, hard work, and service. Over the years, they made their home in Ogden, Fielding, Riverside, and Plymouth, Utah.
Dorothy worked at Tremonton Sportswear for nine years, earning a 10-speed bike as an award for perfect attendance. She also worked at La-Z-Boy, Sprouse (in the fabric department, of course) and retired from Autoliv after eight years of dedicated service. While at Autoliv, she received numerous awards for perfect attendance and most hours worked — a testament to her strong work ethic and reliability.
She cherished her calling as one of the ward librarians and served faithfully for many years. She found great joy in helping others and being part of her church community.
Dorothy had a remarkable talent for sewing and crocheting. Taught by an aunt shortly after she married, she could recreate patterns just by studying a crocheted item — a gift she refined over time. There wasn’t anything she couldn’t do — even if it meant getting under the hood of a car. She made beautiful blessing dresses (both sewn and crocheted) for her granddaughters and delighted in making hair bows for little girls.
After retirement, she and Verlin spent countless hours in their garage building wooden treasures for their children and grandchildren. Their creations — hutches, nightstands, benches, headboards, and shelves — were made with love and built to last.
Dorothy loved to travel with Verlin, usually by car, so they could stop along the way and discover new places. She collected souvenir spoons from every state they visited and displayed them proudly. (The only states they missed were Alaska and Hawaii)
She also had a special place in her heart for their little dog, Missy, who will miss her dearly.
Her grandchildren will always treasure memories of weekends at Grandma and Grandpa’s — enjoying waffles and hot chocolate, camping out in the RV trailer, and crafting doll blankets and pillows from fabric scraps — always wrapped in Grandma’s warmth and love.
Dorothy loved her family fiercely. They were her entire world. She was selfless, always putting others first, and taught everyone around her how to love unconditionally.
She is survived by her loving husband, Verlin Boyer Hess, and their children: Verlin Eugene “Bud” (Julie) Hess, Cindy Lee (Jerry) Fronk, and Michael Boyer (Angela) Hess. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and her brother Paul R. Evans.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dorothy Marie and Darhl E. Evans; her brother D. Robert Evans; sisters Nancy and Margaret Ann; and her three beautiful daughters: Lorrie Lynn, Patricia Marie, and Bobbie Sue.
A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at Rudd Funeral Home, 111 N. 100 E., Tremonton, Utah. A viewing will be held from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m., followed by the funeral at 12:00 p.m. Interment will take place at the Plymouth Cemetery.
