Obituary

Garry Dean Carter passed away on August 29, 2026, at the age of 87.

Garry was born on June 24, 1939, in Stone, Idaho. He entered the world as a twin, along with his sister, Terry Jean Carter. Their beginning was a remarkable one. Terry weighed only about 3½ pounds at birth, and Garry, born a short time later, weighed just 3 pounds. Their grandmother was a midwife and helped care for the tiny newborns. She placed them in a shoebox, surrounded them with cotton, and placed them near the door of the old cookstove to keep them warm. People came from all around to see the tiny babies. From the very beginning, Terry and Garry had to be fighters to survive.

Three years later, they were joined by their younger brother, Wayne, who preceded Garry in death. During his early years, Garry and his family lived in Stone and Holbrook, Idaho; Garland, Utah; and Burley, Idaho.

Garry grew into a remarkably talented and capable man. He had a natural ability to understand how things work and seemed able to build, repair, or create almost anything he set his mind to. Over the years, he became skilled as an electrician, plumber, mechanic, and carpenter. He also learned a great deal while working with his friend Roy McCallister, whose friendship and influence remained an important part of Garry’s life.

One of Garry’s great passions was restoring and working on old cars. He built an impressive collection of Model Ts and loved the challenge of bringing them back to life. People called him the ‘Model T Man’. He found great enjoyment in searching for the parts needed to complete his projects. Garry and his father-in-law, Jack Anderson, traveled throughout the country together looking for old and hard-to-find parts, creating many memories along the way. When Garry couldn’t find the part he needed, he would simply fabricate one himself. His mechanical ability and ingenuity were remarkable.

Garry married the love of his life, Marie Anderson, on September 7, 1963. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan Utah Temple on June 24, 1965. Together they built a life centered on family, hard work, and service. Garry built a beautiful home for their family that today stands as a monument to the role he fulfilled well as a husband and father. Garry and Marie were blessed with two sons, Lonnie and Spence. Both developed an interest in working on cars over the years and learned much from their dad.

Garry worked for Tremonton Public Works for many years, serving the last few years as the city’s Public Works Director. He finished his career working for the Box Elder School District as a school carpenter before retiring in 2001.

Garry showed his love for people through many quiet acts of service, from pushing snow for neighbors, taking friends to breakfast, mentoring young men, and sharing his handyman skills. His influence will be felt through the generations.

Garry is survived by his wife, Marie; his two sons, Lonnie and Spencer; his granddaughter, Shanna (Carter) Kennedy, and her husband, Clayton; his great-grandson, Beckett; and his twin sister, Terry.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Garry’s memory through an act of kindness or a donation to a charity of your choice.
