With profound sadness and deep gratitude for a life well lived we announce the passing of a truly honorable man and a legacy of courage, Gary Lee Hess passed away on June 27, 2026, in Ogden, Utah.
Born June 24, 1953, in Tremonton, Utah, to Gerald R. & Florence B Hess, he has now been reunited with loved ones that have been surrounding him with comfort and strength to fight on for the last three years.
Gary made an impression with quiet strength, unwavering love and a heart big enough to carry everyone he cared about.
Gary was a devoted husband, for 53 years, to the love of his life Susan Elaine Anderson Hess. They were married October 6, 1972, in the Ogden LDS Temple.
He devoted his working years to accountability, respect and determination and selflessness. From a Crossroads diner cook, he planted his work roots as a Quality Assurance Inspector for Thiokol in 1977, then on to DCMA in 2003 and then Bastian Technologies, where he retired as a well-respected employee in 2025, with countless awards and recognition for the work he had done.
Gary cherished his family and grandchildren. His family was the center of his world, and his greatest joy came from spending time with them making lasting memories for generations to enjoy. Family never had to wonder how he felt. It was found in the steady presence he offered, the lessons he quietly taught, the pride in his eyes and the countless moments he shared with them. Gary possessed a quick quiet sense of humor that often-caught others off guard. He never needed to be the loudest in the room to make people laugh. A subtle smile, a perfectly timed remark or a playful glance said everything.
Whether surrounded by mountains, open skies, quiet waters or simply enjoying nature’s beauty, the outdoors renewed his spirit and reminded him of life’s simple blessings. He found peace outdoors where he felt most at home.
Gary was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Belmont 1st Ward. He served as a primary teacher with Susan and as a counselor in the Elders Quorum.
His legacy is not only found in the years he lived, the 10 years he served for the Garland Fire Department and then 10 years for the National Guard, but in the values, he instilled, the love he quietly gave and the lives he shaped. He leaves behind a family forever strengthened by his example and comforted by the countless memories of a man whose actions spoke louder than words!
He is survived by his wife Susan Hess; Daughter Shaela (Dan) Stapley; son Matthew (Nicole) Hess; Son Kyle (Lindsey) Hess; 12 grandchildren & 9 great grandchildren; brother Robert (Dixie) Hess; sister Karen (Harold) Luckey; mother-in-law Patricia W. Anderson and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents Gerald & Florence Hess, brother Gerald Dee Hess and father-in-law Alvin B. Anderson.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 6, 2026, at Noon with a viewing held prior from 10-11:30 A.M. All services will be held at Rudd Funeral Home- Tremonton (111 N 100 E- Tremonton). Interment will follow the service in the Plymouth Cemetery with military honors.
