Jane Henrie Hess (aka Mom, Grammy, Queenie), age 78, passed away peacefully in Layton, Utah, on August 4, 2025 surrounded by her family.
Born September 16, 1946, in Tremonton, Utah, Jane was the beloved daughter of Radcliffe Henrie and Pheobe Hall. She grew up the youngest of 13 children on the family farm in Blue Creek, Utah.
Jane was raised with strong values and an unmatched work ethic, which she carried throughout her life. In 1964, she graduated from Bear River High School and later attended LDS Business College and Utah State University. While at Utah State, she officially met Harold Hess. Although they knew of each other at Bear River High, their paths didn’t cross socially until a college class seated alphabetically brought “Henrie” and “Hess” side by side.
Harold and Jane had differing memories of the proposal; Jane claimed Harold had to ask three times before she said yes. Harold’s persistence prevailed, and on August 4, 1967, they were sealed in the Logan Temple. It was only fitting Jane passed away August 4, 2025, her 58th wedding anniversary at 3:58 pm. She had a 4:00 pm anniversary date at “Roadkill” (what Dad and Mom affectionately called Texas Roadhouse), and she knew Harold would be there waiting because Harold didn’t like to be late!.
Jane paused her schooling to support Harold in earning his accounting degree. Sacrificing for others became a lifelong theme. In 1975, after living briefly in Logan and Livermore, California, the Hess family settled in Bloomington, Utah. Their home on Sugar Leo Road was a haven, a place where all were welcomed, fed, and loved. Jane’s cooking was legendary, whether it was dinner for seven or 157. Family reunions, neighborhood kids, and anyone passing through could count on being well fed and warmly embraced.
Although she worked a few jobs early in her marriage and years later became the media coordinator (librarian) at the newly-built Bloomington Elementary, Jane’s full-time roles of wife and mother were the titles she cherished most. In a series of miracles, they welcomed baby Gregory Harold in 1973. Then, against all odds, came Spencer, Emily, Katie, and Abigail in rapid succession, each child another miracle and testimony to Jane’s enduring hope and faith.
Jane’s pleasures were simple and heartfelt. She loved card games, especially Rook, and often watched the Game Show Network. She thrived at choir practice, Relief Society activities, and cheering from the stands at countless games and performances. A woman without guile, Jane made friends wherever she went.
Though always classy in dress and speech, she wasn’t afraid to get her hands dirty, mowing the lawn, bottling fruit, or digging in the garden beside Harold. Even in their later years, when health challenges crept in, Jane and Harold kept their yard and garden thriving at their Farr West and Kaysville homes. Jane was always in motion, first one awake, last to bed, and always doing.
Jane’s unwavering faith in Jesus Christ, her temple covenants, and her understanding of the Plan of Salvation were the foundation of her life. Her legacy will endure in the faith, love, and strength of her posterity.
Jane is survived by her children: Spencer Hess (Heather), Emily Brown (Mike), Katie Moulding (Adam), and Abi Hassinger (Jed); 20 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and her siblings Steven Henrie (Donna), Teddy Peck, Freda Harris, and Ann Venn. She was preceded in death by her husband Harold, son Gregory Harold, parents Radcliffe and Pheobe, brothers Wynn and Weston, and sisters Deaun, Helen, Madge, Monette, Shirley, and Ruth.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 9, 2025, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (1085 N. 50 E., Kaysville, UT). Viewing will take place from 10:00–11:30 a.m., with services beginning at 12:00 p.m. Interment will follow at the Fielding City Cemetery.
As a family, we express our heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caretakers at The Abbington Assisted Living of Layton and the hospice providers at Inspiration Hospice. In particular, we thank Paige Gomm, who lovingly cared for both Jane and Harold in their final days. She is more than a nurse; she is an adopted member of our family and truly an angel on earth!
