John Walter Brand , age 80, passed away peacefully early in the morning on July 7, 2026, in Ogden, Utah, due to complications following gallbladder surgery. A man of bold temperament, yet quiet strength and unwavering devotion, John was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend and caretaker of the needy, whose life was defined by service to his family, his country, and his faith.
Early Life and Education
John was born on May 20, 1946, in Brainerd, Minnesota, to Walter Severt Brand and Helen Augusta Johnson . He was the third of four children. During his youth, the family moved to Arizona, where John attended Prescott High School, graduating with the class of 1964.
Military Service and Career History
After graduation, John began his professional journey with Mountain Bell Telephone in Prescott. In 1965, he entered a period of dedicated service to his country, joining the Arizona National Guard for a four-year tenure. His career was marked by a strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit. After several years in telecommunications, John moved his family to Clarkdale, Arizona, where he purchased a Rainbo Bread Company franchise. As a small-business owner, he became a familiar face in the community, delivering baked products throughout the Cottonwood, Clarkdale, and Sedona areas. In October 1974, John transitioned back into the telecommunications industry, moving to Kennewick, Washington, to work for General Telephone Electric (GTE). By the early 1980s, his expertise led him to Boeing Computer Services at the Hanford Nuclear site in Richland. He was eventually transferred to The Boeing Company in Issaquah, Washington, where he served as a Project Planner until his retirement in 2001.
Marriage and Family Foundation
John married his lifelong and eternal companion, Edna Clara Better , on September 10, 1965, at The Church of God in Prescott, Arizona. Their family foundation was further strengthened when they were sealed in the Mesa, Arizona Temple in 1974, a sacred occasion they shared with their two oldest children. Throughout their 60 years of marriage, John and Edna built homes and lasting memories in many communities, including Prescott and Clarkdale, Arizona; Kennewick, Issaquah, Pasco, and Moxie, Washington; and finally Tremonton, Utah.
Faith, Service, and Hobbies
In 1973, while living in Clarkdale, John and Edna joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. John was a faithful member with a profound testimony, serving in numerous capacities, including Primary Teacher, Scout Master, Bishopric Councilor, Stake High Councilor, and Temple worker. He was a lifelong advocate for Scouting and was known for the quiet, impactful way he taught his children his virtues and his constant desire to serve others. Beyond his professional and religious life, John was an accomplished harmonica player. His music and his gentle presence were a staple of family gatherings.
Family and Survivors
Preceded in Death: John was preceded in death by his sister, Linda Townsend (Brand) . Survivors: He is survived by his devoted wife, Edna ; his four children and their spouses: Frank Brand (Lynaea), David Brand (Alisa), Roseann Ziggan (Ben), and Jeff Brand (Shaila). His legacy also continues through his 18 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. John is further survived by his siblings: Marie Farris (Brand) , Marni Cavingh (Brand) , Tom Scharr , Rodney Scharr , and Brian Scharr .
Funeral Service and Memorial Information
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at the Deweyville LDS Church, located at 10750 UT-38, Deweyville, UT 84309.
The schedule is as follows:
● Family Gathering: 10:30 A.M. in the Relief Society Room.
● Funeral Service: 11:00 A.M. in the Chapel.
● Family Luncheon: 12:00 P.M. in the Gym. Provided by the Tremonton 16th Ward Relief Society.
There will be no public viewing. Interment will take place at a future date at the Deweyville Cemetery. For those unable to attend in person, the service will be livestreamed via Zoom at the following link:
