Joyce Daisy Hansen Stokes

March 28, 1925 — June 26, 2022

Elwood

Joyce Daisy Hansen Stokes (97) passed peacefully from this life on June 26, 2022. She was born on March 28, 1925 to Daisy Emma Currell and Joseph Hansen in Elwood, Utah, where later she and her siblings learned to work hard as they milked cows and helped with farm chores. Joyce considered herself to be a tomboy, and especially liked fishing with her dad. At eight years old, she was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Bear River. She graduated from Bear River High School.

Joyce was working at a bank, when Howard – a handsome young man who had recently returned from serving in World War II, entered her work place. It was love at first sight and led to marriage in the Logan Temple on June 24, 1946.

Howard and Joyce made their home on a family farm in Elwood. They worked hard as they reared cattle, cultivated several hundred acres of crops, and raised their children. They had five sons – Steven (Betty), Ross (JoAnn), Randall, Tommy (Debbie), Michael (Cindy); and one daughter, Julie Hunter (Brian Juhola). Joann Martinez, a Navajo daughter was added through the Indian Placement Program. It was a sad day when they lost four-year-old Randy in a tragic accident.

Joyce began painting in her youth and through the years became a talented artist; she had several beautiful paintings in her home. Another hobby was genealogy, which she worked on diligently throughout her life. As she rested from her life’s labors, she enjoyed word search puzzles. Joyce continued to bless all with her smile and positive attitude. Her faith in Jesus Christ and His atonement gave her hope and kept her pressing forward.

Joyce treasured spending time with all her family – cookouts on the patio, creating back-drops and narrating plays for the grandchildren, and going to the mountains to camp. She enjoyed spending winter months in St. George with Howard soaking up the sun, hiking and collecting rocks. Her family could always count on a homecooked meal – roast beef, mashed potatoes with gravy, and all the fixings on Sundays was among their favorite.

Joyce was a loving and devoted mother to seven children, and grandmother to 17 grand, 37 great, and 7 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard; sons, Steven and Randall; grandson, Ian Dennison, and great-great granddaughter, Addyson Marie Hawkes; parents; and siblings: Vern, Dale, Darwin and Bonnie. Joyce was a fun, kind and compassionate woman who is loved by her family and admired by many life-long friends – she will be greatly missed.

We’re thankful to all those family members and friends for all their loving care and support.
