Kelly John Mitchell, 49, beloved husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Tremonton, Utah, on October 23, 2026, after a courageous 2½‑year battle with colon cancer.
Kelly was born on August 18, 1977, in North Ogden, Utah, the youngest of eight children to Josephine Rae and Rulon Nyles “Mitch” Mitchell. Growing up in a large, loving family shaped him into the steady, capable, quietly humorous man everyone depended on.
A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter‑day Saints, Kelly served a mission from 1998–2000 in the Cincinnati, Ohio Mission, an experience that strengthened his faith and deepened his love for service. Throughout his life he served faithfully in many callings, including Executive Secretary and High Priest while living in Roy, Utah. His final calling was Ward Technology Specialist, which he fulfilled diligently for six years, always happy to help anyone who needed it.
On April 28, 2000, Kelly married his sweetheart, Jana Sue Hone, in the Bountiful Utah House of the Lord. Together they welcomed five children and built a life anchored in devotion, loyalty, humor, and unwavering love. Jana remained by his side through every moment of his illness, just as they had stood together through every joy and challenge of their marriage.
Kelly is survived by his greatest joys in life, his wife Jana Mitchell & his children Kambrea (Wiley) Stott, Gage B. Mitchell, Chezney N. Mitchell, Kataya A. Mitchell, and Summer R. Mitchell. As well as his granddaughters Eden Ivy Mitchell, Juniper Josephine Stott, Everlee Ann Stott, and a soon‑to‑arrive granddaughter Stott.
He is also survived by his siblings Kent (Cherilyn) Mitchell, Kami (Lynn) Tilby, Kathy (Curtis) Johnson, Nyla Bowers, Nyles (Kenna) Mitchell, and Becky (Brian) Hartle.
Parent‑in‑laws Janet & Dennis Hall, & Vicki Hone; In‑laws Robert (Camille) Hone, Joy (David) Bowe, and Russell Hone; and numerous extended family members whom he loved deeply.
Kelly was preceded in death by his parents, Jo Rae and Rulon “Mitch” Mitchell, his brother Brian Mitchell, and many cherished aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Kelly was known for his charitable “fix‑it” nature, the person who ran toward car accidents, emergencies, or a friend in need without hesitation. A true jack‑of‑all‑trades, he could repair anything internet, computer, roof, plumbing, electrical, or car related. He finished basements, built sheds, tended a beautiful garden, mastered finish carpentry, grew peppers with pride, cooked like a master chef, and partnered in a roofing business. His talents were endless, and he shared them freely.
After roofing, Kelly spent 16 years building a distinguished career with the Internal Revenue Service, serving as a business accounts customer service operator, phone systems analyst, and most recently in JOC records development. He treasured the coworkers and friends he made along the way and served them with the same quiet dependability he showed everywhere else in his life.
Though not a man of many words, Kelly’s actions spoke louder than any speech ever could. He lived as a disciple of Jesus Christ — consistently, humbly, and wholeheartedly.
Kelly and Jana’s relationship was filled with humor from the very beginning. The first words she ever said to him were, “Can I use you? He simply replied, “Yeah, what do you need?” Little did he know what he was signing up for, he would be washing her car for the next 31 years. The last words he said to her were about his medication: “Give me a minute.” After she gave him the medicine, he got growly and said, “No, damn it, I’m gonna smack you!” If you put her first words with his last response they match up perfectly just like Kelly and Jana making a perfect, tender snapshot of their lifelong banter and love.
Kelly was extraordinary. Steady, capable, hilarious, and endlessly giving. His legacy lives on in the family he adored and the countless lives he quietly lifted. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
