Lamar Glen
Udy
May 14, 1948 — Sep 4, 2026
West Valley City
Lamar Glen Udy, age 78, passed away on September 4, 2026, at Legacy House of Spanish Fork in Spanish Fork, Utah.
He married Susan Marlene Anderson Udy on February 25, 1972. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on May 25, 1973. Lamar and Susan met through Susan’s cousin and Lamar’s best friend, Rex Godfrey, who grew up down the street from Lamar. In 1974, Lamar and Susan built their home in West Valley City, Utah, where they made a life and raised their family.
Lamar spent his early years in Fielding, Utah, working on his father’s and neighbors’ farms and at U & I Sugar. He graduated from Bear River High School in 1966 and from Utah State University in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in Automotive and Diesel Technology.
Following graduation, he drove semi-trailers for Utah-Idaho School Supply and Thatcher Chemical but spent most of his career as a bus operator for the Utah Transit Authority, where he was once recognized as Operator of the Year. He drove at least three million consecutive safe miles without being at fault for an accident. He also worked for many years as a bus operator for the Salt Lake School District and as a delivery driver for the Newspaper Agency Corporation.
Lamar served in various callings as a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and particularly enjoyed his time as Scoutmaster. He enjoyed the outdoors and felt enlivened and refreshed there. He climbed King’s Peak and Mount Timpanogos and, at age 69, took a January Polar Plunge in Utah Lake. He maintained a consistent and extensive training routine that included weights, stretching, and running. He successfully completed nine marathons, with a best time of two hours and 50 minutes and a ninth-place finish in his age division, as well as other shorter races and, at age 63, a 10K mud run.
Following a geology class at Utah State, Lamar developed a fascination with rocks and made a hobby of collecting them, many of which he used to decorate his yard. He gardened and also grew, enjoyed, and cared for many trees at his home. He also valued reading and learning and independently studied Spanish and Tai Chi.
Family meant everything to Lamar. He enjoyed sharing jokes from work with his family, and even as teenagers, his children regularly gathered around him at the kitchen table when he returned home from a late evening shift for a reheated dinner and to swap stories from the day. He gathered them there again for early-morning scripture study. He could be found holding an infant grandchild and later climbing trees, attending games and performances, or hiking with them as they grew up.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hyrum Glen and Afton Udy; his sister, LaRene Buttars; his beloved wife, Susan Marlene Udy; and his granddaughter, Tirzah Ceann Isom. He is survived by his sister, Barbara (Steven) Winward; and his five children: Carrie Sue (Robert) Isom, Eric (Erin) Udy, Paul (Melanie) Udy, Jason (Liliana) Udy, and Ryan Udy. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
