Lyle J Steed

August 6, 1942 — June 5, 2025

Lyle J Steed, age 82, of Stone, Idaho, was born on August 6, 1942, in Tremonton, Utah to Vernon Job Steed and Tressie Chrestena Neal Steed. He passed away June 5, 2025 at his home. He was a lifelong resident of Stone, Idaho. He was educated at Stone Elementary and Malad High School where he was involved in wrestling, auto mechanics, and rodeo.

Lyle married Kathleen Hurd on June 2, 1961, in Snowville, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Brigham City Utah Temple in 2023. They first met when the Stone and Snowville wards were combined to create the Curlew Ward. They recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary.

He had a great love of farming and ranching which was his chosen career in life. He also ran a dairy for many years. In his early years he worked at the Sugar factory in Garland, Utah and also at Crowthers Flour Mill in Malad. He drove the milk truck for his uncle Joe Steed, and also worked for the US government performing blood tests on cattle. He served as General Watermaster for many years.

Lyle was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a term on the Oneida County School Board, was a lifelong board member of the Delmore Canal Company and served as President for 20 years. He was also a member of the Cattlemen’s association.

Rodeo was a major part of his life. He started as a young child riding his goat. In High School he won the all-around cowboy and also won numerous rodeo competitions in bareback and bull riding. He also participated in calf roping, bulldogging, and team roping with his brother, Carl.

After High School he became a member of the Curlew Valley Rodeo Board, eventually serving as its president for over 30 years.

Dad enjoyed camping at Black Pine and fishing at Jimmy Smith’s Lake with his family. He also enjoyed time with his friends hunting in the mountains near Challis, Idaho.

He was very playful in nature with his children and grandchildren. He would wrestle, tickle and put you in a leg lock just to show you how much he loved you.

Dad taught his children many things such as how to ride a horse, sense of right and wrong, a good work ethic, the importance of community service and helping your neighbor. He also taught them the many uses of baling twine.

He is survived by his wife Kathleen, his children Melanie (Max) Steed-Hildebrand, Carolyn (Shane) Blackner, Shawn Steed, Shirley Steed, Connie (Bruce) Sweat and daughter-in-law Cara Southworth Steed, 17 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Dee and Carl, five sisters, Nola, Eva Lou, Elaine, Darlene and Linda.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Debbie and Camille of Mission Healthcare.
