Nola (Schenck) Wood

May 16, 1940 — February 6, 2026

Tremonton

Nola Schenck Wood, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, joined her sweetheart Lee J on February 6, 2026. We joke that Dad came to get her and said, “hop in, let’s go” and off they went, quickly and unexpectedly, like many of their adventures.

Nola was born May 16, 1940, to Oscar Lyman and Fern Layton Schenck. She grew up in Clearfield with four brothers and one sister. Nola grew up in a tight knit community and maintained friendships from childhood. Not many people experience the joys of having best friends for 80 years! . She was a proud graduate of Davis High school, class of 1958.

Mom met dad at 16 years old and they were always together. She loved to tell how she was expecting a ring for Christmas, but got a typewriter instead. They were married October 12, 1959, and later sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple on January 10,1969 . They were married 47 ½ years and raised 5 children. Somehow she managed “5 under 5 years old”. Because of this, she was always extra compassionate to young mothers. She was the proud mother of 5, grandmother to 17, and great grandmother to 31.

Nola and Lee J loved taking their family on adventures. Oftentimes, they would load the car, choose a direction, and head off to explore. Mom could make a mean PB & J sandwich on the jockey box of the car, a fact she was very proud of! Her children remember often going fishing and camping at Avon. This sense of adventure continued with their grandchildren as well, who remember visiting grandma and grandpa in their trailer, parked in a beautiful place, usually Guineveah, Gros Ventre, or Jackson Hole, and getting to spend time with them.

Upon retirement as the Chief of the Command Support Office at DPRO Thiokol after 26 years of service, Nola and Lee J enjoyed the snowbird lifestyle. Regularly living in St. George in the winters, and a mix between Tremonton and Jackson Hole, Wyoming in the summer. They had a gang, the Trackers and Kickers, who would grab a lunch and head out in the desert. She loved this group and the adventures they had!

After Lee J’s death in 2007, Nola’s travel slowed, but she took great joy in being available for the next generation of recitals, plays, and sporting events. Nola read thousands of books to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Children naturally gravitated towards Mom, and it was not uncommon to see her sitting with her arm around a child, patting their leg, and listening intently to what they were saying. She especially loved cuddling a baby.

Relationships were very important to Nola. She was a “be there” person and made tremendous effort to go to every activity she was invited to. It was common to get a phone call or text from her reminding you that she was thinking of you. One of her best traits was the smile that made you feel like a friend. If you weren’t her friend already, you quickly became one!

Mom will be remembered for her birthday calls, her loving nature, and her ability to make and maintain friendships. She will be missed.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Lee J., parents, Oscar Lyman and Fern Layton Schenck, siblings, Carma Frazier, Dee Schenck, Rex Schenck and Kim Schenck. She is survived by her brother, Gary, children, Connie (Floyd) Fuller, J Lee “Gus” Wood, Paul (Teresa) Wood, Pam (Mark) Thompson, Joel (Laura) Wood, and all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
