Shirley Nome Hancey Scoffield passed away on October 24, 2025, in Tremonton, Utah, at the age of 92.
Shirley was born in Idaho Falls to Denzil LaVor and Delta Josephine Jorgensen. She was the third of eleven children, with six boys and five girls. Shirley was positioned between the six boys. At 14 years old, she kept up with the boys by playing fast-pitch softball for the Salt Lake Shamrocks in the shortstop position.
Shirley married Cal M. Scoffield in Centerville, Utah, on August 19, 1950. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on January 10, 1952. They were the parents of six boys and one girl. Their children include Mark (Sherri) in Fresno, California; Val in Tremonton, Utah; Scott (Jeris) in Hooper, Utah; Kelly (Jo) in St. George, Utah; Lindy (Cathy) in St. George, Utah; Jay in Stockton, California; and Sam (Steve) in South Jordan, Utah. They had twenty-six grandchildren and forty-eight great-grandchildren. Her family was her most outstanding achievement.
In 1972, the family moved from Charleston, Utah, to Winona, Minnesota, where Shirley started college at age 43. In 1976, they relocated to Natrona Heights, Pennsylvania. Shirley continued her education by attending graduate school at the University of Pittsburgh, earning her degree in Education and beginning her teaching career. In 1982, the family moved to Kentucky, where she also taught. Then, in 1983, they made their final move to Tremonton, Utah. Shirley taught fourth grade at Fielding Elementary until she retired in 2001 after 23 years of teaching. To keep busy, Shirley served on the Tremonton City Council, joined a skeet shooting club in Logan, and enjoyed spending time with family.
Shirley loved her family, and they were, above all, her most outstanding achievement. She loved music, played the violin and the organ. She enjoyed the outdoors, skeet shooting, tubing, and other activities. She loved gathering people, cooking, and feeding many; her meals were always well-known and appreciated.
She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving and sharing her testimony in many capacities.
