Obituary

Verlene Udy Watson, 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on August 18, 2026, at her daughter’s home in Tremonton, Utah.

Verlene was born February 5, 1941, in Tremonton, Utah to Verl and Edith Udy. Mom was raised in Riverside, Utah until she was eight then the family moved to Fielding, Utah. Working hard was instilled at an early age, milking cows, churning butter, hoeing beets, and picking potatoes among other farm chores. She participated in the high school drill team. Her senior year a blind date introduced her to the love of her life, Lyle Watson of Garland. They were married October 20, 1960. The love mom and dad shared for over 64 years was incredible to witness every single day.

In high school mom worked at Jack & Pat’s Radio Shop. After graduation she worked for Dr. John Hurley, Tremonton City Drug, and then Thiokol until it was time to start a family. What a great gift it was for us kids to have mom as a constant at home. Sewing dance costumes, coaching softball teams, not to mention her mad cooking and baking skills.

Once we kids were all but out of school mom put her cooking skills to work at Bear River Middle School Cafeteria for 17 years. It was the perfect job she told us, she would work until one in the afternoon and go directly to pickup her grandsons from daycare each and every day to have that “special spoiling time” she called it.

Mom loved snowmobiling, camping, cooking, sewing, and was a great golfer. She was Skyway Golf Women’s Champion twice, in 1986 and 1990.

Mom endured more heartache than a mother should; her youngest daughter Patti was killed at 23 by a drunk driver and five years later her eldest daughter Annie was critically injured in an auto accident that left Annie permanently disabled. Her selflessness in retiring early to help care for Annie was never a question. We did so for 24 years until Annie passed two weeks after dad in 2024. Mom was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and she will be greatly missed.

Verlene is survived by her daughter Vicki (Duane) Godfrey. Her two grandsons, who meant the world to her, Hayden (Kenzie) Williams, and Parker (Valerie) Williams; Great grandson Finn Lyle Williams, her “other daughter” Carol (Wes) Estep, as well as many additional “bonus” step-grand kids and great-grand kids. Brothers; Owen (Kay) Udy, Boyd (Kris) Udy, Jess (Georgia) Udy, and John McClellen, Sister-in-law, Donna (Bob) Montgomery, and Brother-in-law Gene Watson.

Verlene was preceded in death by her loving husband Lyle, daughters Patti and Annie, her parents, in-laws Don & Lovella, sister Kayla McClellen, sisters in-law Shirley Watson, Rose Watson and brothers in-law Wayne Watson and Denny Richardson.

In honoring mom’s wishes she requested only a graveside service. A graveside service to honor her life will be Saturday, August 22 at 10:00 A.M. at the Tremonton Riverview Cemetery.

Special thanks to Jessi Udy, CNS Hospice Care for the amazing care she provided mom in her final days. Angels truly do walk among us.
